About the Role
As an early member of our Data Scientist team within the Applied Product division, you will play a crucial role in defining and building the data-driven product development culture at OpenAI. Whether for consumer products or our developer platform, you’ll set key north-star metrics, design the first A/B tests, and create dashboards that the entire company can rely on for product data insights. This is one of the key OpenAI positions that will empower you to work with our product development team, driving data insights and influencing core OpenAI jobs and initiatives. This role is based in our San Francisco HQ, and we offer relocation assistance to help you join us at OpenAI.
In this role, you will:
- Embed with the product development team as a trusted partner, uncovering new ways to improve the product and drive growth.
- Define and interpret A/B tests to answer critical questions regarding model and UX changes.
- Establish a data-driven culture by defining, tracking, and operationalizing feature-, product-, and company-level metrics.
- Develop and socialize dashboards, reports, and self-serve data solutions to empower the team and company to answer product questions independently.
You might thrive in this role if you have:
- 5+ years of experience in a quantitative role, ideally as a founding Data Scientist or product analyst at a hyper-growth company or research organization.
- Experience proposing, designing, and running rigorous experiments using SQL and Python, with clear insights and product recommendations.
- The ability to define and operationalize new product-level metrics from scratch.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with product managers, engineers, and executives.
- Strategic insights that extend beyond statistical significance testing.
You could be an especially great fit if you have:
- Experience in NLP, large language models, or generative AI.
- A strong programming background, with the ability to run simulations and prototype variants.
- Experience validating quantitative insights with qualitative methods such as surveys or UXR.

Compensation
$245K – $385K + Equity Offer
