The team includes experts from diverse legal fields such as AI, privacy, IP, corporate, employment, tax law, regulatory matters, and litigation, making it a core part of OpenAI careers.

About the Role
As part of the AI Product Counsel team at OpenAI, you will work on key legal initiatives related to our advanced AI products, models, and technologies. Your primary responsibility will be to collaborate closely with the research, engineering, and product teams to ensure the successful development and release of innovative products and services. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to engage at the intersection of legal and AI technology. Reporting directly to the Head of Product Counsel, you’ll be at the forefront of shaping AI legal policy.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA, and operates on a hybrid work model, requiring 3 days in the office per week. OpenAI hiring provides relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

  • Serve as the primary counsel and strategic partner for several teams focusing on AI research and product development across OpenAI positions.
  • Identify and mitigate product, regulatory, privacy, and other legal risks associated with AI technologies.
  • Create strategies for addressing legal challenges in innovative ways and develop scalable processes for managing risks across OpenAI jobs.
  • Collaborate with the Commercial legal team to help bring AI products to market for both consumers and enterprises.
  • Become a subject matter expert in AI law and contribute to the development of careers for artificial intelligence by advancing legal policy positions in this space.

You’ll enjoy this role if you:

  • Have over 10 years of experience combining in-house and technology-focused law firm roles, ideally within OpenAI careers or similar environments.
  • Are adept at interpreting the letter of the law while applying a practical and principled approach to problem-solving.
  • Excel at building cross-functional relationships and communicating in ways that resonate with various teams, fostering a balance between responsible development and innovation.
  • Have a strong sense of ownership, are inquisitive, passionate about technology, and thrive on tackling complex legal challenges in ambiguous situations, a key aspect of OpenAI hiring.
  • Hold a JD and are licensed or qualified to practice law in California.

About the Interview Process
