San Francisco State University (SFSU) invites applications for the full-time temporary position of Research Technician III under the Genentech Foundation Scholars Program. Position Overview
The Research Technician III will play a critical role in training and supervising both undergraduate and graduate students in the Genentech Foundation (GF) Scholars Program. This program is a part of the University’s commitment to providing research opportunities to those interested in STEM careers. The technician will be responsible for guiding students through laboratory procedures and experiments, ensuring they gain the necessary skills for further academic and professional advancement. In addition, the incumbent will manage aspects of the GF grant budgets.
This position reports to the CoSE Associate Dean and works closely with the Genentech Foundation Program Director and Co-Director. The role is funded entirely by the Genentech Foundation Grant and will be renewed annually based on the availability of funds.
Key Responsibilities
- Train and Supervise Genentech Foundation Scholars: The technician will introduce GF Scholars to various research techniques such as confocal microscopy, PCR analysis, DNA sequencing, and protein analysis. Additionally, the technician will assist with independent research projects aimed at preparing students for entrance into MS and PhD programs. This aligns with the SFSU hiring initiative to bring talented professionals to the university.
- Conduct Research and Present Results: The technician will design experiments, analyze data, and prepare research for national conferences such as ASCB and ABRCMS. Skills in Western blot analysis, sequence conservation, and data interpretation are vital to this role.
- Mentorship and Supervision of Junior Scholars: The technician will help prepare scholars for future research opportunities, both during the academic year and through summer programs. Responsibilities include preparing reports and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- A four-year college or university degree (equivalent experience may substitute).
- Thorough knowledge of research techniques, hypothesis testing, data analysis, and personnel management.
- Three years of progressively responsible technical research experience, with at least one year of experience in data presentation or analysis.
- The ability to develop research techniques, analyze complex data, and collaborate effectively with students and faculty.
Preferred Qualifications
- A Master’s degree in Biology with two years of post-M.S. experience.
- Extensive experience in molecular and cellular lab techniques, including PCR, DNA sequencing, immunohistochemistry, protein extraction, and advanced microscopy techniques.
- Experience with high-end imaging equipment like confocal and scanning electron microscopes.
- Proficiency in tools such as Excel, PowerPoint, and specialized lab analysis software.
